In this community center rendition of Brecht’s Chalk Circle, the community members have forgotten a most important prop: Michael (the child). We watch an actor make a quick choice, and balling up the “Community” sign on the table, creates a makeshift bundle of joy. Over the course of the first half of the play Michael is held and handled, bounced and cooed to. During intermission we watch “Michael” get straightened out and folded, re-revealing the Community sign, and as the second half of the show begins, where he has now grown to an age he can skip off on his own, the folded Michael unbends and rises to show us a new and fully mobile boy, who holds hands and rides on shoulders. When he turns his back to us in the courtroom we can see, he is still made of the “Community” .
